Equipment - besides skates (!!) and warm clothing, all children enrolled in the Kidskate program and the early Canskate levels are required to wear a skating or hockey helmet. This is, of course, for your child's own protection. Helmets can be purchased at Canadian Tire or sporting good stores. You may also be able to pick up a good used helmet in smaller sizes at Play It Again Sports.
Kidskate Class Size - we will divide the children enrolled in Kidskate into small groups. Our Canskate coach and her program assistants will be on hand so that everyone gets sorted into the right group. Each group will have plenty of hands to help hold up the little ones so that they enjoy their first few classes. Each group has a name - and each child and coach will have a name tag – so that they can get to know one another. This will look like chaos for the first couple of classes, but it is organized chaos. And soon everyone will settle in and know where they need to go and when.
Dressing Rooms - when you enter the arena, on your right hand side there is a large sign which designates the dressing room number(s) you can help your child can get ready in. There is a large overhead sign that points you in the right direction for these rooms. For dressing rooms 1 through 4 - go straight and through the door on your right just past the canteen doors. You should expect the dressing rooms to be a bit crazy - especially for the first week or two - so you may wish to allow a bit of extra time to get your child ready.
First Day - At 6:00 p.m., your child should be dressed for skating and waiting just in front of the gate to the skating surface. For Kidskate, the coaches will help them on and off of the ice surface. In addition to the coaches, a number of members of the Executive will be on hand to greet you as you arrive. We hope you will join us for coffee and treats (look for the table beside the skating surface!) while your children are skating.
Length of Season - while the Season runs until March 16th, the Kidskate Program is offered in two ten week sessions. You may enroll for both during September registration or register only for the first session. Enrolment for the second session will be held at the end of December / early January. In the second session, there will be the Eastman Fun Skate and the Ice Show. We also hold an end of the year Potluck Supper and Awards Banquet. See the attached calendar for dates (page 2 of the Member Handbook).
Other General Information - Inside the canteen area - there is a large board dedicated to information about the Hazelridge Skating Program. Be sure to check it out each week for important announcements and a skating calendar. Also in the canteen area is a bulletin board about fundraising for the Sports Complex. You may wish to peruse this on a regular basis as well.
Once again, welcome to our Club. We look forward to seeing you at the arena soon. If you have any questions about this information or other items that are not covered, please don't hesitate to ask any of the Skating Executive. Our names and phone numbers are listed in this handbook.
